Q & A
Why did you start your company?
I started Swell Fundraising to help an organization raise more money and reach more donors through their event. The initial software build was built entirely out of passion but I quickly recognized the efficiency, awareness and benefit it created. Since that time, I’ve been on a mission to help nonprofits gain more from their event fundraising activities through technology.
What has kept you and your company in Birmingham?
This is home and we have the support and resources here.
What do you think makes the Magic City, “magic”?
Without a doubt, it’s the people that bring the ‘magic’ into this city. I can think of so many incredible people who through their creativity, leadership, and passion have impacted this city. I’d be remiss if I did not point out that much of that ‘magic’ has come from/through the nonprofit sector and philanthropy.
What's the most enjoyable project you're working right now?
I truly enjoy working with and watching each client succeed. Today, I get to jump on a call with a client and help them consider a new, online campaign. I thoroughly enjoy sharing ideas and then helping those nonprofit raise more money. A project that has my focus currently is the launch of our Swell Slides presentation application for general use at a lower cost. I’m excited to be able to put a tool into the hands of nonprofits and event planners that help them use a screen to engage guests and move beyond the endless Powerpoint loop at an event.
What advice would you give budding entrepreneurs?
Be ready to work harder than you’ve ever imagined and surround yourself with people who are smart, trustworthy and thinking big. If it is an entrepreneur in Birmingham, I would encourage them to quickly gain a client or partner in a strategic market.
